Sophia HagopianShe was born in Bitlis. She lost her parents when she was very young; that's why, she was taken to the American orphanage in Izmir. After her husband's death, she continued working until she reached a prosperous state. She dedicated herself to public work where she found spiritual relief and satisfaction. For long years she was the chairman of Armenian Relief organization.
To immortalize her husband's Levon Hagopian's memory, she provided ''Asbarez" newspaper with profitable estates worth $ 30,000. She donated the most valuable estate ''Levon Memorial Centre" to the Armenian Relief Organization.

She under took the establishment of a similar school in Greece in 1960 in coorperation with the Armenian Blue Cross. Apart from these, she participated financially and morally in public activities without any differentiation.

She died on November 28, 1967 and on December 1 after a national funeral procession she was buried in the "Ararad" cemetery of Frezno.

After her death and taking into consideration only the big amounts of money in her will and the donations that she had done to various national institutions, it was found out that more than one million dollar, which was her fortune, was provided to her nation as one of its humble and worthy children, the ideal Armenian mother.

She got the honourable name of benefactress from  Catholicos Khoren I, the Catholicos of House of Celicia in 1963 in a special pastoral letter dated October 30.

A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine.

I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite sense of mere tranquil existence, that I neglect my talents. I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.

When, while the lovely valley teems with vapour around me, and the meridian sun strikes the upper surface of the impenetrable foliage of my trees, and but a few stray gleams steal into the inner sanctuary, I throw myself down among the tall grass by the trickling stream; and, as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unknown plants are noticed by me: when I hear the buzz of the little world among the stalks, and grow familiar with the countless indescribable forms of the insects and flies, then I feel the presence of the Almighty, who formed us in his own image.
